Leadership book for adventurous, courageous and bold leaders based on harvesting the ancient wisdom and qualities of a nomadic mindset!

‘I really think you are on to a very interesting topic and concept. I look forward to seeing the rest of the book where you build on the nomadic mindset from a historical perspective. It is almost a natural human drive that we are fighting against, we were nomads well before we were settlers. A settlement is easier and we tend to move towards ease.’

Claire Smith, VP Marketing, Vancouver Convention Centre

‘Intriguing and timely! This book brings the wisdom of the nomadic people, who have adapted for centuries to the ever-changing nature, to today’s disruptive world, and shows us the way to migrate to the new future.’

Wendy Tan, author of Wholeness in a Disruptive World

‘Mindset – having the right mindset, to me is one of the most important success factors of great and inspiring leaders. In Kevin Cottam’s leadership book, ‘The Nomadic Mindset … the Mindset of the Future’, he offers you a much needed fresh new framework, approach, and perspective on mindset and the qualities and behaviors associated with this typology. He has seamlessly interconnected the ancient nomadic wisdom and today’s leadership in a story-filled revealing reflective book that shares with you the vital success qualities of a nomadic mindset. The Nomadic Mindset, I believe is a necessary read for leaders of all levels who are traversing today’s disruptive environments.’

Marshall Goldsmith Thinkers 50 – #1 Executive Coach and the only two-time #1 Leadership Thinker in the World.

“Kevin Cottam’s inspired new leadership book, “The Nomadic Mindset: The Mindset of the Future”, explores key mindsets and personal qualities essential for good living and well-being in our rapidly changing world. Profiling three typologies that live within us all – the nomad, the builder, the settler – Kevin makes a compelling case for appreciating and cultivating our ancient nomadic wisdom. Filled with engaging stories and case studies, this new book is a captivating reminder that we are here together to live, to grow, and to serve.”

nomadic mindset

Let me give you a taster of this crazy and life changing adventure...

January 5, 2017. It’s chilly, by Moroccan standards (which means, around 5 degrees Celsius), as our group sets off in the early morning from Brahim Tahero’s, ‘Maison d’Nomades’ in an old and rickety 4×4 Jeep towards the Atlas mountains through the Stony Sahara.  Our group consists Hicham (my photographer), Salem (my guide and translator), and Mohamed (our driver) and myself. I can’t help but think that we look like the Indian Jones’ team, dressed in traditional Saharan nomadic clothes of long flowing blue or white or black kaftans and turbans, setting off to find a mysterious golden nugget of information that would lead us to the next nugget and then another till we find the destination, the nomadic mindset.

Our first stop is the grocery store to purchase the welcome gifts.  This comprises of a box full of solid cone shaped sugar and boxes of green tea.  These are the staples of life, Aissa Derhem said to me later in my research – ‘tea and sugar are more important the food’.

The Nomadic Mindset…The Mindset of the Future’, is a leadership book for bold and courageous leaders based on ancient nomadic wisdom and adapted to contemporary leadership in organizations today from start-ups to multi-national enterprises.

Through research garnered from nomadic cultures in Mongolia, Morocco and the Maasai in Kenya and conversations with over 100 executives of all levels in the private and public sectors, The Nomadic Mindset is an atypical book that weaves nomadic stories that exhibit qualities and executive case studies useful for today’s leaders in a disruptive world.

Written in three parts, Departure / Discover / Destination, the reader will be introduced to a new personality framework defined by a mapping of three different mindset typologies – nomadic, builder and settler.

Everyone has a dominance for one of these mindsets and every organization passes through these mindsets at different times in their history. Every chapter is rich in story and nomadic qualities that can enhance your mindset for the future.  If implemented, you can improve your communication, engagement, expansion and overall effectiveness.

Remember, nomad means the movement of the mind!

The physical nomadic journey began in Ulan Bator, Mongolia.  Experiencing the vast rolling grasslands and desert, while staying in a yert eating, learning and laughing with a local family was beyond my wildest dreams.  More to discover and can’t wait to get back there.  Here I learned ‘nomad means the movement of the mind’, Batgerel Bat – amongst many other things

I had a ‘free African massage’ as I traveled across a potholed, bumpy, dusty gravel road towards the Maasai Mara.  My statuesque Maasai ‘brother’ Joel greeted me in his beautiful red tartan like fabric traditional dress with all his jewellery – from then on the magic of the Maasai and the land was revealed before my very awestruck eyes.  Words to ponder by Benson Murtere, ‘We are migrating…where we were is not where we are.’

Under the cool bright starry night of the Sahara, Bourgmal, my guide, taught me the ancient technique of telling direction by the stars. This is how nomads lead their caravans as night, still to this day. They start from Orion’s belt which has become part of my logo. I love this Berber proverb, ‘you can’t put a whole camel in the pot at the same time, only one piece at a time.’ – there version of take one small step at a time, and that is what this journey has been. Now it is coming to you!

After my tour of Kenya in the Maasai Mara and Morocco in the Sahara, I needed to debrief, chill and just climatise myself back in my contemporary world. Lisbon on the Atlantic Ocean was the perfect location for a global nomad to rest and gently get back to the hustle bustle. As Lisbon, was a great capitol of great explorer’s way back when, it was only appropriate for global nomad to chill for a bit and eat some wonderful bbq frango – you gotta try it.

This is little red dot city country is where I have scribed most of my book with the wonderful support of speaking colleagues and my mentor, Fredrik Haren.  However, it got pretty boring sitting at home while writing in Singapore, so my nomadic mindset got activated and I visited the National Museum, hotels lounges and lobbies, cafes, restaurants, the metro and bus and … writing and writing some more.  ‘Never settle for too long.’ That is the last chapter of the book – that is what nomads do, then they strategically move!
